The monograph reconstructs the history of the Sputnik Bureau of International Youth Tourism in 1957–1991 on the basis of documents from central and regional archives, periodical press materials and a complex of scientific literature. On the pages of the book, people who defend the youth tourism system in the USSR come to life, as well as young Soviet travelers discovering the world around them and, above all, beyond the Soviet ecumene. The publication covers a number of issues: the problems of institutionalization, creation of the material, technical and financial base of international youth tourism; geography and volumes of inbound and outbound tourism; hospitality techniques and display facilities; the discovery of the Soviet youth abroad and the view of young foreigners on Soviet reality; shadow aspects of youth tourism.
The book is intended for a wide range of readers — researchers, teachers, students and anyone interested in the vicissitudes of Soviet history.
