About

The monograph reveals the main aspects of Soviet everyday life in the context of accelerated and inorganic modernization of the country. The world of Soviet everyday life has been reconstructed according to the leading parameters: household services and household practices, industrial experience and labor relations, leisure and active forms of recreation, family experience and family strategies, “household etatism”, etc.
The reconstructive possibilities of the study have been significantly expanded due to the widespread use of materials previously unknown to the scientific community from leading Russian archives. The use of a microhistoric approach and tools of oral history helped in the study of such little-studied aspects of Soviet everyday life as the practice of elementary survival in ordinary and force majeure periods of Russian history. The materials of social statistics used in a number of sections of the monograph provided an opportunity to move from the micro to the macro dimension of Soviet everyday life. The research pyramid is crowned by the author’s concepts of the place and role of service in Soviet everyday life, the specifics of mass tourism as a special form of everyday life and communal apartments as a specific socio-cultural phenomenon.
The book is intended for teachers and students of humanities faculties in the fields of “history”, “social anthropology”, “cultural studies”, “sociology” and “political science”, as well as for a wide range of people interested in the daily life of Russians of the past century.
