About

The monograph examines a new phenomenon in the Russian labor market — the self-employment of independent professionals (freelancers) working remotely using the Internet. How many freelancers are in Russia? How do they live and work? What are the work values and motivation of freelancers? What are the opportunities and risks of independent employment? What are the prospects for the development of freelancing in Russia? The authors provide answers to these and other questions based on unique empirical data — four waves of the large-scale monitoring “Russian Freelance Survey”, covering the period from 2009 to 2019. Over the past decade, significant changes have occurred in the socio-demographic and professional composition of freelancers, as well as in the formal and informal institutions in the online labor market. The study sheds light on the key trends, documents the diffusion of innovative labor practices among a wider population of Russian workers, and reveals important problems along the way. The book fits into a growing body of literature on nonstandard work in the information economy, contributing to the renewal of empirical knowledge and theoretical concepts within the sociology of work. It discusses the reasons and potential policy implications of these findings for the future development of online platform work in Russia.
The book is of interest not only to social science scholars but also to a larger audience interested in the labor market trends.
