About

This monograph studies the genesis and evolution of the artistic style of the Russian post-war avant-garde (the neo-avant-garde) in the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century. This style is shown to follow the avant-garde of the 1900s — 1930s, forming complex love-and-hate relationship with contemporary developments in the world art (primarily textual artwork by various movements of the Western neo-avant-garde) and related phenomena in the Soviet art scene, primarily underground (i.e. uncensored) artwork. Much attention is given to art projects of the neo-avant-gardists and their attempts to combine poetry with painting, music, and performance arts, to employ modern science and technology such as computers.
The book is addressed to literary and cultural researchers as well as to a broad audience of readers.
