Abstract

The course provides a holistic understanding of the research cycle in the field of applied regional studies which includes an introduction to fundamental philosophical and methodological principles as well as acquaintance with modern approaches and technologies such as OSINT and AI. During the course students will gain a formalized understanding of various research techniques, develop knowledge management skills and master the ability to work effectively with primary sources.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • Clarifying the difference between nomothetic and idiographic types of research, developing an ability to examine and categorize the researches that exist in the field according to their types and functional purposes.
  • Exploring distinctions between different kinds of textual and audiovisual information. Developing the skills in working with primary sources, this includes mastering formalized techniques of source-interrogation and extracting information from unstructured data.
  • Acquiring a holistic understanding of the research cycle concept. This includes grasp of dynamics & time management during each research step as well as the distinction between preliminary and processing phases of research.
  • Develop text-management skills which implies understanding the specific features of different research outputs and the levels of generalization they require. This also includes selecting appropriate methods in compliance with principal task of the research, availability of sources and choosing presentation format.
  • Understanding the concept of a primary source and implementing various research techniques to extract information cost-effectively.
