Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course examines the four-century historical period during which European states reached the peak of their economic, military, and political power.
Learning Objectives
- Analyse the evolution of European media systems in the context of global changes (printing, censorship, the emergence of the newspaper press, the advent of the telegraph) and explain how these technological and political shifts influenced the formation of modern journalism and public communication.
- To identify and critically evaluate historical examples of propaganda, public opinion formation, and the "other" in colonial and imperial discourse in order to recognize similar media strategies in contemporary international news and information campaigns.
- Apply knowledge of key events, social contradictions, and cultural contexts of the period (revolutions, industrialization, nationalism, imperialism) to prepare factually accurate, contextually rich materials and avoid historical errors and stereotypes in reports, analytical articles, and multimedia projects.

- - Describes the gradual spread of geographical knowledge in the Old World and the first exploratory expeditions
- - Identifies key political figures and major demographic and social trends in the world around 1500 CE.
- - Demonstrates an understanding of key theoretical concepts such as the global economy and world system, the concept of the modern state and their limitations.
- - Identifies the major world religions, their divisions, the regions in which they are most widespread, and the major events in their history.
- - Analyzes the expansion of European influence in China, its causes and consequences.
- - Describes the key events in the political history of the 19th century.
- - Formulates the reasons for modernization and reforms carried out by the governments of Turkey, Japan and China.
- - Identifies key political, economic, demographic and social trends in the world in the late 19th – early 20th centuries.
