Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course focuses on the analysis of contemporary Japanese society from perspectives of development and institutionalization. The most important part of the course is to provide an analysis of theoretical and (or) officially announced aspects and practices related to the development and institutionalization of Japanese society in a comparative perspective. Participants will gain insight into Japanese identity and social phenomenon topics, comprehend the role of social norms, behavioral patterns and their influence on contemporary Japanese society.

  • Offer interpretative tools for a critical comprehension of cultural and socio-economic aspects of Japanese society;
  • Provide knowledge on issues of collective identity and alterity in relation to modern and contemporary Japanese society;
  • Indicate the gap between theoretical and practical aspects of socio-economic conditions of Japan and cultural influence to it;
  • Develop judgement faculty and skills to produce and communicate a piece of interpretative discourse on the topics of the course within an intercultural, transnational and global perspective.

  • Know and understand main aspects of issues related to collective alterity and identity in modern and contemporary Japan (especially for the period from 1868 to the modern days).
  • Know and understand concepts and tools from the fields of cultural /social and economic studies within an inter-disciplinary perspective
  • Analyze and interpret topics of the course by employing concepts related to field of society, culture and institutions.
  • Produce critical judgments on cultural and socio-economic issues that are part of the program by using informed and solid arguments
  • Refine the capacity to criticize essentialist and stereotypical discourses on "Japanese culture", "Japanese society", “Economic development of Japan”
