About

The monograph was prepared by the Centre for Youth Studies of the National Research University Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg. It was based on the results of the collective project "Creative Fields of interethnic interaction and youth cultural scenes of Russian cities" (2015–2017). The research was conducted among youth of four cities (Kazan, Makhachkala, Saint-Petersburg and Ulyanovsk) using a wide range of methods: student surveys, in-depth interviews, focus groups, case studies of youth communities (vegans, dark-music scene, rappers, search squads, volunteers, female glamorous groups, street workout athletes, anime fans). To analyze the interlacing subcultural, solidarity-based, scenic norms and rules of gender, ethnic and religious regimes that are relevant to a certain group, the authors establish a category of "youth cultural scenes." The book will be of interest to anyone who seeks to understand the cultural diversity of modern youth in different parts of Russia.
