A Russian translation of Peter Wohlleben’s book won the 2018 Merck Translation Award

The winners of the 2018 German Merck Translation Award and the special prize of the Goethe Institute Russia were announced in Moscow. The award ceremony was held at the German ambassador’s residence in Moscow. The audience was greeted by Rüdiger von Fritsch, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany in Russia, and Olga Golodetz, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Government. The jury of the award had been evaluating Russian translations of German authors published within the last three years. Peter Wohlleben’s “The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate―Discoveries from A Secret World”, translated by Natalia Shtilmark, won in the category “Popular Scientific Literature”. The first edition of the book was published by the Higher School of Economics Publishing House in 2017, in the Cultural Studies series. The  Higher School of Economics Publishing House was awarded the honorary diploma of the  Merck Translation Award in the category “Popular Scientific Literature” for its activity in the field of publishing translations from German into Russian. 
The awards were also given in the categories “Literary Fiction” and “Children’s and Youth Literature”. The Goethe Institute’s special prize was awarded for translations of literary fiction and philosophical literature.
“Translators have a special gift, a literary talent, they actually create new works of art”, Olga Golodetz said in her speech.
