Abstract
Since the financial crisis of 2008, the world struggles to get back to noticeable productivity growth. Industry 4.0 is a hopeful new concept that builds on a set of new technologies that have the potential to disrupt productivity. Industry 4.0 describes the combination of digital technologies and covers the entire “intelligent” value chains from design and development, production, delivery, maintenance, and recycling. Through advanced sensors and connectivity modules data is gathered and converted into decision-relevant information. These connected devices build the larger Internet of Things (IoT) and the resulting data feeds into enhanced machine learning algorithms. These set of technologies though are seen as central for competitiveness of entire nations, which is why these topics have benefitted greatly from policy initiatives.
