Course Syllabus

Abstract

Within the course, different types of text corpora and their annotation are presented. Different techniques of corpus data analysis are demonstrated, together with the case studies where these techniques are successfully applied.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn to work with text editors (NotePad++, BBedit) with various text formats (txt, csv, json, xml, markdown)
  • Learn the principles of working with various corpora
  • Understand the capabilities of various corpora, their pros and cons
  • Understand the main types of text markup in a corpus
  • Learn to use CQL (corpus query language)
  • Learn to work with spreadsheet editors (Excel, Google Sheets)
  • Learn to work with various databases (WALS, PHOIBLE, Grambank, Glottolog, The Tower of Babel, etc.)
  • Learn to annotate videos in ELAN
  • Learn to work in AntConc
  • Learn to work in Fieldworks
  • Conduct a small study using corpus data
