Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course is designed to improve students’ spoken English ability through discussions about business topics and by conducting negotiations based on case studies. The class will require that students become familiar with specific business terminology, speech acts (set phrases used in specific contexts) and how to speak formally in a register common to business situations. Each week will consist of one class which will focus on discussing current business topics based on articles, and one class which will focus on a case study, in which a specific business situation will be negotiated in teams or in pairs. Case studies from various industries will be included for practice negotiations. The class will be balanced between actual case studies requiring specific knowledge of industries and language skills and more general discussion of topics mentioned above. Students will be expected to learn specific vocabulary and speech acts related to professional communication in English. The course also aims to develop students’ general critical thinking and debate skills. A final project will consist of student preparation of an original business start-up proposal, presentation and discussion
