This collective monograph is the first Russian-language publication presenting a complex interdisciplinary study of the nature, characteristics and development trends in the field of altruistic self-organization manifested in charity, volunteering, NGO activities and responsible consumer practices. Thus, the monograph sums up the recent results of theoretical and empirical research accomplished by the Center for Studies of Civil Society and the Nonprofit Sector at the National Research University Higher School of Economics. The monograph provides insights into key theories and practices of citizen self-organization, the interaction between self-organizing structures and the state, the history and modern state of the subject of our study. A special focus is made on the data of the Russian Civil Society Monitoring that gained widespread recognition both in this country and abroad and have never been published in such amount before.
The intended audience of the book includes sociologists, historians, experts in political science, public administration and other academic disciplines exploring citizen self-organization, charity, and volunteering as well as teachers, graduate and post-graduate students, NGO leaders and all those interested in the destiny of civil society in Russia.
