More than a century has passed since Friedrich Nietzsche and Max Scheler spoke of the phenomenon of ressentiment. But does this phenomenon really exist? How do the real and fictitious “aristocracy”, from whose positions the social groups that challenge its domination are denounced in ressentiment, relate to modernity? Perhaps it is more correct to speak not of resentment, but of a specific, status-related social position — a “view that discovers resentment”? If ressentiment does exist, how do its multiple modern guises relate to classical descriptions? Has ressentiment become an inescapable norm of modern societies, and what is the reason for this?
