About

The collective monograph, prepared by the scholars from HSE University, Institute of Russian Literature Russian Academy of Sciences, and Lomonosov Moscow State University, explores the pivotal moments of the history of literary institutions in the Russian Empire in the 18th–19th centuries. Using the institutional theory and the concept of the public sphere, the authors study the formation of the social institution of literature, its autonomization and differentiation, interaction with the authorities and related institutions (education, justice system, theater etc.). Such an approach makes it possible to revise many traditional views about the history of Russian literature.
Тhe book is intended both for literary and cultural scholars, historians, sociologists, as well as the general audience.
