Course Syllabus
Abstract
The 20th century was the most intensive period of urban development in human history. Cities, which served as the main platform for socio-economic, political and cultural development, arose in Asia. However, despite all the glitz and glamor of contemporary Asian megacities, they have faced a complex set of crucial problems. This course will introduce students to the basic theoretical concepts of urban studies, as well as examine the practical implications for the region of their specialization.
Learning Objectives
- 1. to learn the main theories and models in urban planning;
- 2. to realize the relationships among theoretical frameworks and their practical implications in the context of Asian cities;
- 3. to study Asia as a whole and specific Asian countries by discussing the distinctive urban features of the region;
- 4. to train presentation skills.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- correctly use the terms of urban studies;
- understand the basics of urban planning models;
- discuss the urban issues of contemporary Asia;
- realize the role of cities in the development of Asia.

Assessment Elements
- Intermediate projectStudents will be divided into groups. Each group has to present the project during last seminar of the first module
- Final projectStudents will be divided into groups. Each group has to present the project during last two seminars
- Participation in seminarsAll the students are required to actively participate in discussion during each seminar. The seminars' program will be given to students in advance
- Practical worksAll the students have to finish two practical works and submit the reports to the Lecturer or his assistants

- 2024/2025 1st modulethere is no grading in the first module
