Аннотация

This course is an introduction to the geopolitical dynamics of the Asia-Pacific region with a focus on the contemporary strategies of Russia, China, and the United States amidst global turbulence. The purpose of the course is to provide a wide-ranging understanding of Asia-Pacific international relations by exploring how major powers project influence and to what ends. The theoretical aspect presupposes an acquaintance with the concepts of Western and non-Western regionalism, integration paradigms, and the shifting foreign policy doctrines of key geopolitical actors. The practical aspect comprises the forming of knowledge and understanding of the reasons, dynamics, and trends of geoeconomic and geostrategic rivalry in the Asia-Pacific, including the transformation of regional security architectures and multilateral alliances.

Цель освоения дисциплины

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to understand the theoretical foundations and historical evolution of the strategic triangle among the United States, China, and Russia, analyze contemporary security flashpoints and alliance architectures in the Asia-Pacific through a theoretical lens, explain the impact of geoeconomic competition, institutional hedging, and normative rivalry in the Asia-Pacific.

Assess the importance of transport, logistics, and economic initiatives for strengthening regional connectivity and changing the balance of power
Formulate well-reasoned assessments of the transformation of the Asia-Pacific security architecture and its implications for regional stability and conflict dynamics
Characterize the geography of key regional disputes, including the Southern Kurils, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and maritime territorial conflicts, and evaluate their strategic significance
Analyze the foreign policy strategies and alliance mechanisms of the United States, China, and Russia in the Asia-Pacific region, using contemporary theories of international relations and geopolitics
Assess the impact of the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, including QUAD, AUKUS, and values-based alliances, on regional security balances and great power competition
Explore China’s doctrinal evolution and institutional expansion in the Asia-Pacific, including the export of its security model and geoeconomic integration initiatives.
Analyze Russia’s strategic reorientation toward the Asia-Pacific, including the “Pivot to the East” policy, the Greater Eurasian Partnership, and security cooperation with China and North Korea
Evaluate the role of multilateral institutions and competing integration paradigms in shaping regional cooperation under conditions of geopolitical and geoeconomic rivalry
Explain the strategic interests, policy instruments, and geopolitical objectives of leading global powers in the Asia-Pacific context
Develop analytical materials and expert forecasts on security dynamics, alliance formations, and institutional competition in the Asia-Pacific region
Apply comparative analysis methods to study the foreign policies and strategic behaviors of states and international actors in the Asia-Pacific system
