Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course is an introduction to the philosophy and ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and of robots based on AI. AI is expected to become particularly powerful and ubiquitous in the immediate future. Several researchers and writers have extolled the quasi-unlimited potential of this technology; others have warned for an imminent ‘singularity’ in human history in which superintelligent AI systems will overtake the hegemony over people. We will start with having a look at what AI and Machine Learning are, and at the tasks they can execute for the time being. The main part of the course will be dedicated to questions as: What is the difference between human intelligence and AI? Could computers have a mind and consciousness? Is thinking computing? Can Large Language Models think? How could AI evolve, ideally and less ideally? What are the risks related to AI? Which ethical principles have been proposed for the reasonable use of AI? Finally, we will delve into some of the research on these topics done at HSE.
Learning Objectives
- • Provide basic analytic and synthetic knowledge of the main problems and questions related to the philosophy of AI.
- • Make students aware of the ethical issues discussed in the professional literature.
- • Prepare the students to recognize hidden assumptions in algorithms and to assess the fairness and legitimacy of AI-driven decisions.
- • Allow students to critically engage with the literature on the conceptual foundations of AI.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- • Know the basic problems and theories of the philosophy of AI.
- • Know key definitions of concepts related to intelligence, mind, consciousness, Turing test, Goedel’s theorem and other topics seen in the course.
- • Understand the difference human / artificial intelligence.
- • Know the key ethical issues related to AI.
- • Have a basis for thinking creatively about new developments in AI.
- • Present and argue for key ideas in the societal and scientific debate.

- Topic 1. Intro. What is AI? What is intelligence?
- Topic 2. Intro. Artificial Neural Nets (ANN).
- Topic 3. Foundations of AI; some history.
- Topic 4. Foundations of AI; some history.
- Topic 5. Intro on (normative) ethics. What is ethics?
- Topic 6. Weak AI versus strong AI.
- Topic 7. Ethics of AI.
- Topic 8. Ethics of AI.
- Topic 9. Ethics of AI.
Assessment Elements
- Test1 (In-class test)In week 4 students will do a written in-class test of about 40 min about all course content seen in the first 4 weeks (lectures).
- OralPres (Oral presentation)The students will present, alone or in small groups, an article or book chapter using a Powerpoint presentation.
- Exam1(Examination1)In the last week of the course students will do a written in-class test/exam about all course content seen (lectures).
