Course Syllabus

Abstract

● This course introduces the fundamentals of global strategic thinking. We begin by analyzing the growing number of global business changes and the increased uncertainty they have brought with them. With multiple changes in the global economics and politics the opportunities and risks associated with staking out a global competitive presence have increased substantially. ● Underestimating risk can lead to strategies that neither defend against the threats nor take advantage of the opportunities that higher uncertainty levels may provide. At the other extreme, assuming that the world is entirely unpredictable can lead managers to abandon the analytical rigor of their traditional planning processes altogether and base their strategic decisions primarily on instinct. ● We define crafting a global strategy in terms of change; how and when a company should change or adapt its core (domestic) business model to achieve a competitive advantage as it expands globally. This definition’s conceptual framework has three fundamental building blocks: a company’s core business model, the various strategic decisions a company faces as it globalizes, and a range of globalization strategy options for creating a global competitive advantage.
