Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course “Basic Chinese Language Course” provides instruction in Chinese from beginner level and is intended to develop students’ command of Chinese phonetics (sounds, tones, intonation, stress, etc.), Chinese characters and writing (strokes, ligatures, graphemes, etc.), vocabulary (monosyllabic, disyllabic and polysyllabic lexical units, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, etc.) characteristic of the spoken and written styles of modern Chinese, and modern Chinese grammar, including stylistic differences between spoken and written language. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to acquire a set of competencies supporting independent learning and cognitive activity; apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the course, as well as intellectual and practical skills and personal qualities, in standard and changing professional situations; and become specialists able to use Chinese as a tool for achieving other tactical and strategic goals and objectives of society and the individual.
Learning Objectives
- The main objective of the course “Basic Chinese Language Course” is to develop foreign-language professional communicative competence as part of the professional competence of a bachelor’s degree holder in business.
- The course aims to develop translation skills from Chinese into Russian and from Russian into Chinese within the lexical and thematic minimum of the core textbook, as well as students’ linguistic and cultural competence.
- Upon completion of the course, students should have command of Chinese phonetics (sounds, tones, intonation, stress, etc.), Chinese character writing (strokes, ligatures, graphemes, etc.), vocabulary (monosyllabic, disyllabic and polysyllabic lexical units, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, etc.) characteristic of the spoken and written styles of modern Chinese, and modern Chinese grammar, including stylistic differences between spoken and written styles. In addition, students should be able and prepared to communicate in a foreign language with native speakers and to participate in a dialogue of cultures, i.e. in intercultural communication. Students should not only understand cultural phenomena of the country whose language they study, but also become more aware of their own culture and be able to represent it in the process of communication.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- - student can introduce himself in Chinese and can briefly tell about himself
- - Conduct simple conversations by asking/answering simple questions and responding to the other person's speech with basic phrases in Chinese language.
- - Combine several short sentences into a simple oral and written statement in Chinese language.
- - Understand individual words and some phrases/sentences in spoken and written texts in Chinese language, typical in everyday communication.
- - Create simple short oral and written texts in Chinese language, express ideas clearly, using mainly simple sentences.

- Develops listening, reading, speaking and writing skills, as well as the grammar structures, pronunciation and character-writing covered in the unit.
