Abstract
Human Resources Management (HRM) is no longer an administrative support function – it is a primary source of sustainable competitive advantage in knowledge-intensive economies. This course examines how firms attract, develop, motivate, and retain people to create economic and organizational value, and why seemingly similar HR practices produce dramatically different outcomes across firms, industries, and institutional contexts.
By the end of the course, students will have built integrated analytical capability across five interconnected levels – individual (motivation, selection, performance), team, organizational (HR systems), strategic (fit with business strategy), and institutional (labour law and market context) – and will be able to apply core theoretical frameworks (SHRM, AMO, HPWS, RBV, Self-Determination Theory, Psychological Contract, and People Analytics) to real-world HR problems in both international corporate settings and Russian organizational practice, while correctly interpreting and applying key provisions of Russian labour legislation alongside comparative international regimes.
The course further seeks to cultivate an evidence-based mindset, enabling students to distinguish empirically supported HR practices from management fads, to make decisions grounded in data and peer-reviewed research, and to reason across industries – technology, financial services, industrial/manufacturing, retail and FMCG, energy and natural resources, and the public sector – thereby preparing them to contribute substantively to strategic conversations about people in any organizational context they will encounter in their future careers.
