Assessment Elements
- Attendance trackingAttendance is monitored using technical means of recording students’ presence, including QR codes, as well as through random checks of students’ actual presence in the classroom. A student’s attendance at a lecture is recorded as present provided that the following conditions are met: 1. The student arrives no later than 10 minutes after the start of the class. Arriving more than 10 minutes late is treated as absence from the lecture. 2. The student remains in class until the end of the session. Leaving the class early without prior approval from the instructor is treated as absence. During class, the use of technical devices, including mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices, as well as reading books, magazines, or other publications, is prohibited unless their use is required by the format of the lecture or explicitly authorized by the instructor. Engaging in activities unrelated to the content of the lecture or seminar, including working on assignments for other courses, personal messaging, or viewing content unrelated to the class, is regarded as insufficient academic engagement and may, at the instructor’s discretion, result in the student’s attendance not being credited.
- TestingAt the end of each seminar, students are given a five-question test covering the content of the seminar. Students receive 1 point for each correct answer.
- EssayThe essay is an original written work of no fewer than 8,000 and no more than 10,000 characters, including spaces. In the essay, the student conducts a comparative analysis of two biographies or autobiographies of prominent business leaders, applying the theoretical models of leadership studied in the course. The purpose of the essay is to provide a conceptually grounded interpretation of leadership behavior, managerial decisions, methods of influence, limitations, and contradictions manifested within specific organizational and social contexts. The empirical basis of the essay must consist of books, including autobiographies, authorized biographies, or research-based biographies devoted to the selected leaders. Unverified online sources, journalistic retellings, and popular summaries published on social media may not be used as the primary basis for the analysis. The essay must include an introduction, a main body, a conclusion, and a list of references. The introduction must provide a rationale for the choice of leaders selected for analysis. The main body must contain a comparative analysis of the two leaders. The conclusion must summarize the key findings resulting from the analysis. The list of references must be formatted in accordance with the established academic requirements and must include the books used as the primary sources, as well as any additional academic sources consulted in preparing the essay. The essay must be submitted for assessment from the student’s HSE Graduate School of Business corporate email account to the course instructor’s corporate email address no later than 11:59 p.m. on the date of the final in-class session. Essays submitted after this deadline will not be accepted for assessment. The essay will be checked for plagiarism. If generative AI technologies are used, the student must disclose their use in the text in accordance with the procedures established by HSE University, specifying the purpose for which AI was used and the results of such use. If the essay is found to contain violations of HSE University’s academic integrity standards, including the use of AI without the required disclosure, the instructor reserves the right to assign a grade of 0 for the essay.
- ExamThe exam is administered on the StartExam platform. The duration of the exam is 70 minutes. The exam consists of four open-ended questions and two mini-cases covering the course content. In formulating their answers, students are expected to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and critical evaluation of the leadership theories and approaches covered in the course, as well as the ability to apply them to specific situations and to provide well-reasoned justification for the approaches they choose. Identical answers submitted by two or more students are treated as a violation of the examination rules by all students involved. The use of any form of communication, generative AI models, or reference materials during the examination is prohibited. The use of any additional electronic devices other than the device used to take the examination is prohibited. If any such violation is identified, the examination results of all students involved will be annulled, regardless of the number of points earned. Students are not provided with access to their examination papers after grading.
