Course Syllabus
Abstract
It is crucial to understand the interactions between gender roles, social power and religion when studying contemporary Middle Eastern societies. Iran is one of the largest and most important countries in the region. Over the past two centuries, Iran has undergone continuous cultural transformations, religious reforms, political upheavals and conflicts. The fundamental changes can be attributed, to a certain degree, to the conflicts and interactions between ethnic, national and religious values, on the one hand, and the modernisation of society and its familiarity with the values of modernity, on the other.
In order to comprehend modern-day Iran, it is essential to undertake a thorough examination of the destructive conflicts and creative interactions between indigenous values and those of Western modernity in the society. To this end, appropriate research contexts are required.
Cinema is a significant methodological instrument across the disciplines of history, cultural and religious studies. In the field of area studies, cinema has emerged as a valuable teaching tool, offering a means to introduce students to the cultures and daily lives of other societies. Cinema is an ideal research context for examining contemporary Iran, as it is a significant cultural-ideological tool in the service of the IRI. Meanwhile, Iranian cinema plays a significant role in challenging the prevailing ideology, which is based on Sharia law.
This course has been developed to be delivered during one module (two sessions per week, one lecture session and one seminar). This course can also be delivered on a semester basis, with one session per week.
Learning Objectives
- ► The primary objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between religious and national values and modernity in contemporary Iran.
- ► The second goal of this course is to familiarise students with how to use cinema as one of the most important research contexts.
- ► Furthermore, students will be introduced to a range of academic resources in English on the topics covered during the course. This will greatly help strengthen their academic reading skills.
- ► Finally, students will have the opportunity to improve their academic presentation skills during discussions and oral presentations.
Expected Learning Outcomes
