Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is aimed at developing students' skills in deep, professional reading and involves a progression from understanding the plot layer to decoding the complex meanings embedded in the structure of a literary work. The key learning outcome will be a proficient command of the tools of linguostylistics and the development of a critical view of the text as a phenomenon in which language and culture are intertwined.
The practical part of the course is devoted to practicing the skills of linguostylistic analysis at the semantic and metasemiotic levels, with a sequential examination of vocabulary, grammar, and phonetics. Students will learn to identify and interpret stylistic devices that, within the literary whole, acquire special, aesthetically significant properties directly related to the author's intention. This type of analysis is akin to the method of close reading and the principles of deconstruction, largely inheriting their logic.
For a more complete insight into the author's vision, students will also master key methods of narrative analysis (biographical, structural, psychoanalytic, etc.) and become familiar with the ideas of such theorists as Propp, Lotman, Bakhtin, Barthes, Booth, and Baudrillard. However, the course's focus will remain on the linguistic aspect.
Seminar work will be based on the analysis of excerpts and complete short stories by renowned English-language stylists, such as Jane Austen, Henry James, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, and others.
The course is designed for 2nd year students of the Graduate Program "Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication" with the C1+ proficiency in English and a confident command of Russian.
Learning Objectives
- Fostering advanced skills in deep, professional reading of literary texts, moving beyond plot summary to the decoding of complex meanings embedded in linguistic and structural layers.
- Developing a systematic understanding of linguostylistics as a discipline, including its core concepts (foregrounding, automatization, convergence, expressive means, stylistic devices) and its principal branches.
- Cultivating the ability to perform close linguostylistic analysis at multiple levels—lexical, phonetic, syntactic, morphological, functional, and graphical—and to recognise how stylistic choices acquire aesthetically significant properties within the literary whole.
- Introducing a range of influential literary-critical and narrative theories (Barthes’s codes, conceptual metaphor theory, psychoanalytic hermeneutics, New Criticism, narratology, Bakhtin’s heteroglossia, philosophical hermeneutics) and explore their potential for productive integration with linguistic analysis.
- Training students in the practice of applying complementary analytical lenses to the same text, so that they learn to see the literary work as a field of tension between linguistic form and cultural meaning.
- Enabling students to develop a critical view of the text as a phenomenon in which language and culture are inseparably intertwined, and to articulate that view in sophisticated oral and written discourse.
- Providing a supportive seminar environment in which students engage with excerpts and complete short stories by major English-language stylists (Wilde, Poe, Joyce, Twain, Cummings, and others), gaining confidence in handling challenging literary material.
- Preparing students for independent research by modelling how theoretical frameworks can be brought together to illuminate a single literary work, culminating in a substantial final analytical paper.
