Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to the global media landscape and analyzes current trends in media industry amid rapid technological shifts, evaluating platform impacts and evolving audience behaviors. The course examines the role of global media outlets as a key instrument in influence warfare and focuses on real-world examples, such as comparing media coverage of major geopolitical crises across global media outlets. Particular attention is paid to practical-oriented aspect of the course that will enable students to learn how news is crafted inside the newsroom: from building the news agenda to managing content creation. Students will learn how to produce different types of audiovisual content, set social media trends, verify sources and assess authenticity in a digital-first environment.
Learning Objectives
- To develop a comprehensive understanding of the operational structure of a television newsroom, and to acquire the practical competencies required to produce a news story across the full editorial cycle — from initial pitch through to broadcast — including under the conditions of breaking news coverage.
- To develop skills in digital storytelling, real-time reporting, and ethical content creation for social media environments.
- To identify trending topics, adapt content for different platforms and audiences, and work effectively with short-form and long-form formats.
- To apply fact-checking and verification techniques to evaluate the credibility of user-generated content.
- To learn how to use AI in content production and distribution.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Formulates a general understanding of the global media landscape and evaluate the shifting global power dynamics in media
- Explains the role of social media in amplifying or suppressing voices, including issues of visibility, algorithmic bias, and digital censorship
- Analyzes real-time and historical media campaigns, conduct narrative tracking, evaluate disinformation tactics, and develop skills in identifying and countering influence warfare operations.
