Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course “Italian 1” aims to solve the following tasks: development of speech (pragmatic) competence aimed at developing and improving communication skills in four types of speech activity (speaking, listening, reading and writing); the ability to plan one's speech behavior adequately owns a communicative case; 2) development and improvement of linguistic competence aimed at systematization of learned material; mastering of language means (phonetic, spelling, lexical, grammatical) based on authentic material; development of skills in operating with language units for communicative purposes; 3) development and improvement of sociocultural (sociolinguistic) competence aimed at increasing the amount of knowledge and improving the skills necessary to use the language in situations of communication with representatives of another culture, the ability to look for ways out of situations of communication failure due to sociocultural interference in communication. As the course is for those who start learning Italian, the syllabus is in English for your convenience. However, the course will be taught fully in Italian, with the consideration of your level, because there are both local and international students who do not share a common first language.

  • Development of foreign-language communicative competence at the basic level, corresponding to A2 of the international Italian language exam CILS, and implying the student’s readiness and ability to communicate in Italian in everyday situations in any communicative context and to engage in academic communication in the simplest communicative situations.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Paricipation
    This assessment element comprehensively evaluates the student’s readiness for the class, including completion of homework, engagement in the learning process, and language activity (initiative in answers, participation in dialogues), as well as the quality of all work completed in class.
  • non-blocking Current assessment
    This assessment element is designed to test the student’s system of linguistic knowledge (phonetics, vocabulary, grammar), as well as the development of language skills and communicative abilities. The results of current assessment allow the student to receive timely feedback and serve as a basis for adjusting the individual learning path. Current assessment may include phonetic, lexical, and grammar tests, listening and reading tasks, as well as tasks for producing oral texts (for example, monologue, dialogue, presentation) and written texts (for example, letter, paragraph, essay).
  • non-blocking Milestone assessment
    This assessment element is designed to comprehensively check the level of development of the student’s communicative skills and serves as an indicator of their progress in learning the foreign language. The milestone assessment is conducted in class after the core body of language material has been covered, once per module.
  • non-blocking Final written work
    This assessment element comprehensively evaluates the level of the student’s lexical and grammatical skills, listening and reading skills, and the ability to conduct effective written communication in a foreign language in various speech situations.
  • non-blocking Oral exam
    This assessment element evaluates the student’s ability to communicate effectively orally in a foreign language in various speech situations, including with support from a written text.
