Abstract

This discipline refers to various educational trajectories offered to students of the bachelor's and master's programs in mastering the optional English course in accordance with the Concept for the Development of Foreign-Language Communicative Competence of Students of the Higher School of Economics. The course is structured in such a way as to enable students to master a range of linguistic and text-analytical skills necessary for interpreting and discussing literary and secondary literary sources. Students master basic linguistic, communication, writing, analytical skills, master literary and related vocabulary, and at the end of the semester prepare a presentation on philological topics. The final grade consists of the following elements: 0.1 for attendance, 0.1 for the English Grammar and Vocabulary Test, 0.1 for the home assignment, 0.2 for the written assessment, 0.2 for the oral assessment, and 0.3 for the final assessment. There are no blocking elements. The prerequisite for course enrolment is a minimum score of 70 points on the Entrance Test.

  • To develop standard English language skills corresponding to competencies of the advanced level, to prepare for the use of these skills in an English speaking formal environment.
  • To equip students with the ability to use literary vocabulary and perceive it in the text, to prepare them for further activities within the framework of the bachelor's program in Philology.
  • To teach students how to prepare and defend individual presentations in English related to their future academic activities.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Master skills of neutral, formal, official writing, learn to write essays, abstracts and reports on professional topics, learn how to conduct business correspondence.
  • Read and discuss English-language texts of literary and literary criticism of different eras and levels of complexity.
  • Master all types of reading, understand the main content of the text, learn to read with an emphasis on observing linguistic phenomena, learn to read fluently in order to answer the questions posed.
  • Improve listening skills by learning to perceive monologues and dialogues on academic and general topics.
  • Present conversational dialogue skills on general and literary topics, learn monologue and dialogue skills.
  • Prepare and present their own research or topic related to literature in the format of a 10-minute presentation with discussion and answers to questions, learn to present information competently.
  • Produce coherent, well-structured, and clear texts on a variety of subjects, expanding points of view, developing arguments, and synthesizing and evaluating information.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Attendance (cannot be retaken)
    The element’s weight in the final grade – 10%.
  • non-blocking English Grammar and Vocabulary Test (can be retaken within 7 days)
    The element’s weight in the final grade – 10%. Students take English Grammar and Vocabulary Test in class.
  • non-blocking Home Assignment (HA) (can be retaken within 7 days)
    The element’s weight in the final grade – 10%. HA includes oral and/or written tasks that are assigned to students for independent completion and submission. Students do the tasks at home and either turn them in to their teachers or submit them via Smart LMS for grading.
  • non-blocking Written Assessment (WA) (cannot be retaken)
    The element’s weight in the final grade – 20%. WA consists of minimum 4 tasks of different types, including interim ones (for example, essays, graph descriptions, reviews, reports). WA can also include annotations, emails, listening and reading tasks, grammar and vocabulary tasks at the end of a section or topic. WA refers to written tasks that students complete in class.
  • non-blocking Oral Assessment (OA) (cannot be retaken)
    The element’s weight in the final grade – 20%. OA consists of minimum 3 tasks of different types, including interim ones (for example, a monologue for 1-year students as well as dialogues and presentations) that students do in class.
  • non-blocking Final Assessment (FA) (can be retaken during the retake period)
    The component’s weight in the final grade – 30%.
