Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course introduces first-year IR students to the principles and practices of academic and professional writing. Students develop skills in political inquiry, critical thinking, source evaluation, paraphrasing, paragraph construction, argumentation, cohesion, and concise expression. The course also introduces key IR writing formats, including research papers and policy memos. Particular attention is given to the ethical and critical use of large language models (LLMs), including effective prompting, fact-checking, bias detection, and responsible integration of AI-assisted writing.
Learning Objectives
- Upon completion of this course, students should: • be aware of formal writing conventions; • use strategies of effective written communication; • produce clear coherent text using appropriate logical connectors; • be able to manage their own writing process through different strategies of prewriting; • be able to critically evaluate sources of information; • develop effective arguments using a variety of rhetorical techniques (examples, statistics, authoritative quotations…); • master academic citation standards.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- prepare basic policy-oriented documents and critically evaluate AI-generated material for accuracy, bias, relevance, and ethical integrity.
- able to produce clear, coherent, and well-supported academic writing on IR topics.
- able to develop focused arguments, organize papers effectively, integrate and cite scholarly sources, paraphrase without plagiarism, and revise their work for clarity and precision

Assessment Elements
- Written Assessment - Academic PaperA 1,000-1,200-word analytical paper using at least four scholarly sources. Assessed stages: question and bibliography, thesis and outline, full draft, peer review, final revision, process portfolio, and AI-use disclosure.
- Final Oral ExamPart 1: Practical Writing Analysis A 90-120-minute, device-free analytical response of approximately 500-700 words based on a short verified source pack. Students are assessed on thesis, evidence use, reasoning, organization, and clarity. Part 2: Discussion of the Written Assessment: The student briefly explains the central argument and organization of their Integrated Analytical Essay. The examiner asks follow-up questions about the use of sources, causal reasoning, connections between sections, and revisions made during the writing process. Students are not expected to memorize or repeat the essay. They should demonstrate that they understand their argument and can explain their writing decisions.
- Module TestsTest 1 (12%) assesses paraphrasing, citation, source integration, and revision. Test 2 (13%) is a concise 500-700-word introductory policy memo based on a verified source pack.
- ParticipationBaseline writing, source-search record, paragraph workshop, draft preparation, peer review, revision memo, and brief end-of-course reflection.
