Abstract
The course “Designing Learning: Principles of Instructional Design” is intended for master’s students interested in creating effective online and blended courses. The course is taught in English and does not require prior background in pedagogy. Students will explore the foundations of instructional design, core learning theories, instructional methods, and digital tools. The course emphasizes practical application: participants will design components of educational products, consider learner motivation, and develop assessment strategies. By the end of the course, students will be able to design and adapt instructional solutions for various educational goals and contexts.
Learning Objectives
- Students will know main learning theories and principles that they will be able to apply when designing instructional elements.
- Students will develop instructional design skills using instructional design models and different methods and tools
- Students will be able to analyze and assess the efficiency of educational products
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Distinguish main learning theories and instructional design models
- Describe instructional principles
- Demonstrate application of main instructional methods
- Analyze and evaluate educational products
- Design educational products
Course Contents
- Foundations of Learning and Instructional Design
- Designing Effective and Engaging Learning
- Interaction and Collaborative learning
- Instructional Media and Digital Technologies
- Assessment and Data-Informed Improvement
Assessment Elements
- Design portfolio presentationStudents present a portfolio of selected instructional design work developed during the course and explain how their design decisions reflect the principles studied.
- Short quizzesShort quizzes assess students’ understanding of the key concepts introduced in each topic. Quiz scores are combined into one overall quiz grade.
- Seminar activityStudents complete short individual and group activities during seminars that apply the concepts and principles discussed in the course.
- Design challengeStudents individually or in groups analyse an instructional problem and develop a brief design solution during class, applying principles covered in the course.
