Course Syllabus
Abstract
This seminar aims to introduce students to basic concepts of translinguistics and transcultural communication as well as to explore how these theoretical premises can be practically applied in the domain of cross-cultural communication. The course has a practical goal of developing skills in the fluid use of linguistic and semiotic resources in diverse communities as well as familiarizing students with linguistically sound methods for creating languages and cultures.
The seminar is for second-year graduate students specializing in intercultural communication in a global information space.
Learning Objectives
- Exploring trans-trends in linguistics, culture and communication studies, with a focus on transmodality, interpretivism, referentiality, intertextuality, transactionalism, positivity approaches to interactional sociolinguistics and cross-cultural communication
- Applying knowledge and research methods of translinguistics and transcultural communication for practical analysis of texts, discourse, communication acts and settings
- Integrating translingualism and transculturality for projecting and designing communication activities and events
- Examining the origines of planned languages
- Grasping the concept of interlinguistics
- Carrying out the transdisciplinary study of a linguacultural phenomenon by means of transmodern linguistic research methods
- Getting familiar with the concept and structure of artificial languages and language construction kit
- Getting familiar and differentiating between world Englishes
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students can distinguish trans-trends in linguistics, culture and communication studies.
- Students can analyze and interpret linguistic, communicative, cultural and social phenomena through the prism of transdisciplinarity.
- Students can model linguistic and communicative phenomena from the perspectives of transmodality, interpretivism, referentiality, intertextuality, transactionalism, positivity.
- Students can apply trans-principles while doing research in the domains of linguistics, culture and communication.
- Students conceptualize the phenomenon of transcultural communication.
- Students apply the approaches and principles of transcultural communication while constructing and modelling communication.
- Students analyze and interpret contexts, settings, acts, activities, events through the lenses of transcultural communication.
