Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course equips future foreign language teachers and professors with the knowledge and and skills of teaching English for Academic and Business Purposes. The course is split into respective sections. Section One, Module One, focuses on teaching English for Academic Purposes. Particular attention is drawn to features of teaching English research discourse, specifically writing proposals and articles along with presenting research results at forums like conferences, symposia, strategic sessions etc. Section Two, Module Two focuses on teaching Business English to adults and deepening understanding of business communication in international organizations. The seminar focuses on effective methods for teaching Business English, including the development of cross-cultural communication skills, the use of coaching and training techniques, and the application of MBA tools. Course prerequisites: Students are expected to have achieved C1+ level of the English language proficiency and major in Foreign Language Teaching in Academic and Business Contexts. Students of other majors need to meet the former prerequisite and either have a teaching degree or be a practicing teacher or pursue an education major.

  • Students can prepare a comprehensive lesson plan.
  • Students can develop various types of self-presentation for personal, professional and business purposes and are equipped with the technique to teach their students work out efficient self-presentations
  • Students develop awareness of how to assist their students master the art of Small Talk across cultures
  • Students can list principles and methods of teaching English for academic purposes.
  • Students can distinguish between genres of oral and written academic discourse in English.
  • Students can design a lesson plan for teaching various genres of written and oral academic discourse in English.
