Course Syllabus

Abstract

The goal of the research seminar "International Business in Transformation. Asian Challenge" to build up knowledge and form skills for scientific research in the field of international business with substantive focus on the Asian companies in increasingly complex, dynamic and challenging global and regional economic and political environments. The course highlights and provides understanding of the key trends of the world economy: international trade and investments, modern technological development and its impact on international production, markets and competition. It presents a broad view of dynamic and deep changes in global business environment, fight for varied resources (mainly energy), transformation of globalization towards regionalization and new forms of un-equity alliances, networks, blocks and links. The course explores key actors of international business, forms and formats of corporate development, ways of growth and progress based on theoretical concepts and approaches, as well as major practical instruments of international management, marketing and leadership competencies. Special emphasis is done on the Asian companies of the studied countries (China, India, Japan, etc.). In the center of review: management systems adapted to global conditions and highly driven by local culture, competitive advantages in view of technological changes, innovation activities, rise and rapid spread of Machine Learning Systems, normally called Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the transition to digital economy and society. Particular attention is paid to the specifics of Asian businesses in terms of interaction with their governments (states’ institutions) and academia within the framework of national innovation systems, to prerequisites, problems and prospects of the advanced innovative development and maintaining leadership in the face of growing global competition and trade wars. The course addresses new requirements for cross-cultural concerns, corporate social responsibility, ESG’ considerations for sustainable business development. The course combines in-class work, as well as; vast and intensive self-study of recommended educational materials; it provides guidelines for research papers’ writing and their defense.

  • Understanding of the main stages and the basic methods of scientific research.
  • Ability to identify the subject, object, subject and environment of research; to formulate a scientific hypothesis, the purpose and objectives of research; to analyze sources, scientific literature on the chosen topic; to write texts of informational, analytical and scientific content; to prepare summaries of scientific content.
  • Clear understanding of modern trends and changes in world economy, international markets, competition and technological challenges, as well as shifts and contradictions in world trade, investments and transformation of globalization.
  • Enhancement of problem-solving skills in management by offering a set of analytical tools (i.e., theories, frameworks, concepts, and techniques).
  • Knowledge of basic management and marketing functions, as well as structures, processes and procedures.
  • Approaches to understanding the multi-facet functioning and activities of the Asian companies in the studied countries.
  • Sound progress in the following skills: critical assessment of analytical materials on the Asian companies; discussion of the main scientific concepts, problems and challenges of the modern international business as well as on and chosen topics of scientific research; work in teams, ability to put competent questions, lead discussions and present research results.

    The final control of knowledge - in the form of a written exam. The exam is conducted in an offline format in the form of a written response to 2 out of 70 questions on the subject matter included in the Program. Time limit: 60 minutes.
