Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course introduces essential industry-specific terminology in English, crucial for effective communication in the global film industry. Participants will learn fundamental terms and concepts related to film development, production, and marketing, ensuring successful collaboration with international colleagues and partners. Practical sessions focus on developing skills in professional communication, including drafting documents and presentations, to help students navigate the international market with confidence.
Learning Objectives
- Introduce key roles and responsibilities across the film production hierarchy and how terminology varies by job.
- Equip learners with essential terminology used by producers, directors, cinematographers, editors, and production designers.
- Develop foundational skills in screenplay writing, including structure, formatting, and industry-standard language.
- Analyze and apply terminology related to story development, cue sheets, and script revisions.
- Build understanding of visual storytelling through lighting concepts, terminology, and practical terminology for shaping mood and tone.
- Enable accurate communication with departments on set, including pre-production, production, and post-production workflows.
- Foster public speaking and presentation skills to pitch ideas, defend creative choices, and communicate plans to stakeholders.
- Apply learned terminology to real-world scenarios through exercises, briefs, and mock productions to build confidence and fluency.
- To master specialized cinematic vocabulary and professional terminology required to analyze and discuss the emotional and structural role of music in film.
- To develop advanced professional speaking and listening skills necessary for executing high-stakes industry negotiations, contract discussions, and deal-making.
- To draft professional industry documentation, including music spotting logs, licensing requests, term sheets, and negotiation counter-proposals.
