Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course examines youth cultures and subcultures in Asia and Africa through the interdisciplinary perspectives of sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, media studies, and area studies. It begins with debates on youth as a socially constructed category and introduces classical subcultural theory, post-subcultural approaches, cultural scenes, neo-tribes, and solidarities. The course then considers how these concepts travel beyond their Euro-American contexts and how they must be revised in relation to colonial histories, postcolonial modernities, religion, class, caste, ethnicity, gender, state regulation, and uneven globalization. Regional cases include music and fandom in East Asia, campus and consumer cultures in South Asia, DIY scenes in Southeast Asia, cultural and political expression in the Middle East and North Africa, and urban popular cultures and creative economies in Sub-Saharan Africa. Cross-cutting topics address digital platforms, gender and embodiment, migration, precarity, aspiration, and future-making. Seminars are organised around close reading, comparative case analysis, visual and digital materials, scene mapping, and project workshops. Current assessment includes seminar activities, an individual comparative case study essay, and a group regional case presentation. Intermediate assessment takes the form of an individual mini-research project and oral defence.
Learning Objectives
- The course aims to provide students with a theoretically grounded and context-sensitive framework for analysing youth cultures and subcultures in Asian and African societies. It develops students' ability to connect area-specific knowledge and relevant language competencies with comparative youth studies, to interpret cultural practices without reproducing universalist or Orientalist assumptions, and to design a small independent study using ethically appropriate methods.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Explain key concepts and debates in youth and subculture studies, including generation, transition, style, resistance, subcultural capital, scene, neo-tribe, solidarity, and waithood
- Critically evaluate the applicability and limitations of theories developed in Euro-American contexts when analysing youth in Asia and Africa
- Compare youth cultural formations across countries and regions while accounting for historical, political, linguistic, religious, and socioeconomic contexts
- Analyze music, fashion, visual media, digital practices, public spaces, and everyday cultural materials using relevant concepts and evidence
- Identify how class, caste, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, religion, migration, and platform infrastructures shape participation and exclusion in youth cultures
- Formulate a researchable question, select appropriate comparative and qualitative methods, address ethical issues, and present an evidence-based argument in written and oral form
Assessment Elements
- Seminar Activities and ParticipationThe mark reflects the quality of preparation and analytical work, not attendance alone. Assessed activities may include reading commentaries, scene maps, visual or digital source analysis, case discussions, peer feedback, and short in-class presentations. The final mark is based on the student's best sustained performance across the course.
- Individual Comparative Case Study EssayStudents write a 2,000-2,500 word essay that applies course concepts to one carefully contextualised youth-cultural case and develops a meaningful comparison with a second case, context, or theoretical interpretation. The essay must use at least six academic sources and at least two primary cultural or documentary materials. A reference list and a short note on source selection are required.
- Group Regional Case PresentationStudents work in groups of three or four to design and conduct a small-scale empirical study of a youth culture, subculture, scene, community, identity, or cultural practice in one country or region of Asia or Africa. The purpose of the project is to apply the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired during the course to the independent analysis of a specific empirical phenomenon. Unlike a descriptive case presentation, the project must be organized around an original research question and include a clearly explained research design, empirical materials, analysis, and conclusions. Possible topics may include music scenes, fan communities, digital cultures, street-fashion cultures, gaming communities, student activism, religious youth movements, creative communities, migration-related youth identities, or other forms of youth cultural participation. Groups may use one or more of the following methods: • analysis of a clearly defined corpus of social media posts, videos, images, music, or other digital materials; • qualitative analysis of cultural, media, or documentary materials; • four to six interviews with adult participants; • observation and fieldnotes; • mapping of a youth-cultural scene; • comparative analysis of two related youth-cultural cases.
