Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course provides an introduction to financial accounting. It is aimed at providing a broad understanding of the theory and practice of financial accounting and financial management, both for non-specialist students and as a foundation for further study in the area. This course does not focus on the technical aspects, but rather examines the basic principles and underlying concepts and the ways in which accounting statements and financial information can be used to improve the quality of decision-making.
Learning Objectives
- This course is designed to introduce students to the principles of accounting and financial reporting. Students will master technical skills of recording economic transactions, as well as learn how accounting standards and managerial incentives the financial reporting process and why this matters to company stakeholders.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Perform double-entry bookkeeping and prepare basic financial statements
- Apply the accounting concepts to evaluate company’s assets, liabilities, and equity
- Distinguish between debt and equity financing
- Calculate adjustments to short-term assets and liabilities
- Analyse and interpret the financial reports of a company
