Course Syllabus

Abstract

Neuroeconomics is an interdisciplinary field that combines economics, psychology and neuroscience to understand how the brain evaluates options and makes choices. This course introduces the neural foundations of decision-making, beginning with the relevant brain anatomy and the core models of how the brain computes and compares the subjective value of different options. Students will examine how valuation is shaped by emotion, by risk and uncertainty, and by the trade-off between immediate and delayed rewards, and how these processes give rise to the systematic biases described by behavioral economics. The course also explores decision-making in social and evolutionary context, showing how the "economic brain" is adapted to interaction with others. In the final part, we turn to applied neuroeconomics — including consumer neuroscience, addiction and clinical decision-making — while critically assessing both the promise and the limitations of the field. By the end, students will be able to connect economic theories of choice to their underlying neural mechanisms and to read primary neuroscientific research with an informed, critical eye.
