Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course examines multilingualism from a psychological perspective. It addresses how people process, comprehend, produce, learn, and manage more than one language, how multiple languages are represented in memory and supported by the brain, and how multilingual experience relates to cognition, development, culture, education, and creativity. The course combines classical bilingualism research with contemporary plurilingual perspectives that conceptualize an individual's linguistic resources as dynamic and interconnected.
Learning Objectives
- Explain major questions, paradigms, models, and debates in the psychology of bilingualism and plurilingualism
- Analyze the methods and empirical evidence used to study multilingual language processing, cognition, development, and behavior
- Distinguish classical bilingual models from contemporary plurilingual approaches and explain where the perspectives converge or diverge
- Locate, evaluate, and use academic sources relevant to a focused research question
- Design and conduct a simple correlational study using a shared class dataset
- Use Jamovi to conduct and report a correlational analysis
- Present scientific material clearly in oral and written formats and interpret correlational findings without causal overstatement.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Explain the major paradigms of multilingualism and demonstrate an understanding of the kinds of questions that are pertinent to the study of the human mind in the multilingual context
- Analyze the methodological and empirical foundations underlying research in multilingualism.
- Utilize academic sources to research and understand mental states and processes in the human mind.
- Organize and present research outcomes visually and/or in writing.

- Student-directed teaching (SDT)Use the assigned chapter as the primary source and supplement it with appropriate academic literature. • Teach concepts and mechanisms, not only study-by-study summaries. • Use empirical evidence selectively to demonstrate how major claims are tested. • End with questions that require interpretation, comparison, or critique. • All six team members must make a substantive oral contribution. • Submit the presentation materials by the stated smartLMS deadline.
- Student-directed discussion
- Chapter summary paperEach student (this assignment is individual) will be responsible for summarizing the WHOLE chapter as a written assignment. It should be written in standard English using the APA format. It is due on Sunday at 23:59 during the week of the presentation.
- In-class participation
- Project PresentationStudents make an oral presentation of the research project’s findings. The presentation is given by a group of students assigned to each project. The aim is to simulate a presentation at an academic conference. The feedback on the presentation can be used to modify one’s research paper. Presenters will have 15 minutes to do their presentation and 5 minutes for Q&A.
- Project ArticleStudents write an empirical article reporting the findings of the research project. The article was submitted by the same group of students who were assigned to each project. The article should be written in APA style.
