Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course "Molecular Evolution" introduces students to modern approaches to the study of evolution at the molecular level, covering topics from historical concepts to the analysis of genomic data. Core subjects include alignment and phylogenetics algorithms, the origin of life and humans, and applications of evolutionary analysis in medicine and genetics.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • Provide students with a systemic understanding of the molecular mechanisms of evolution and their role in biology and medicine.
  • Train practical skills: pairwise and multiple sequence alignments, construction and interpretation of phylogenetic trees, work with databases (NCBI, Uniprot, ClinVar, gnomAD) and genome browsers (UCSC)
  • Teach students to integrate evolutionary data (conservation, duplications, horizontal transfers) into the interpretation of clinical variants and biological hypotheses
  • Foster critical thinking regarding the limitations and uncertainties inherent in evolutionary reconstructions
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze molecular mutations and interpret evolutionary mechanisms.
  • Apply evolutionary methods to real-world problems.
  • Assess the limitations of molecular evolution and comparative genomics.
