Abstract
This course introduces participants to the fundamentals of representing corporate interests in international multilateral fora and helps them to grasp the key concepts necessary to navigate this field with confidence. It focuses on the diversity of terminology, the core categories, and the logic of interaction between business and international institutions, and how agendas, rules, and recommendations important to the corporate sector can be shaped.
Special attention is given to how corporate interests are advanced through international formats such as the agencies, programs, commissions of the United Nations, BRICS Business Council, APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), BIAC at OECD, as well as how intergovernmental commissions operate. Students will get an understanding of how these platforms differ from one another, what opportunities they offer for business, and which approaches are most effective in each specific case.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able not only to navigate the theory with confidence, but also to apply the acquired knowledge in practice: to choose the most suitable international platform for the objectives of a corporate project, to understand its operating mechanisms, and to prepare position papers for advancing business interests. In this way, the course provides a comprehensive understanding of how business can act professionally and effectively in the international multilateral environment.
Learning Objectives
- develop students’ ability to understand and properly assess the system of opportunities for representing corporate interests at various international organizations and forums, as well as at the informal and formal intergovernmental associations; help students to acquire practical skills in designing activities in the field of corporate interest representation at the international multilateral platforms; help students to develop skills in working with target audiences of business projects and initiatives before, during, and after the project implementation at the international fora; develop students’ ability to prepare position papers that facilitate the representation of business interests on the international stage; develop students’ skills to prepare a draft plan for representing corporate interests at an international multilateral platform, including the tools and channels for its implementation.
