Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course explores dynamics of regionalisation and regionalism in the Eurasian space, focusing on the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as the “assemblage point” of Greater Eurasia and on Central Asia as the space of competition and cooperation in this region. The course pays particular attention to the relationship between institutional and ideational dimensions of regional integration, as well as to the agenda-setting and strategies of the EAEU, the CIS and BRICS. The course also examines economic drivers behind the EAEU development, opportunities for its interaction with third countries within the framework of free trade zones, as well as the development of the common agricultural market and interregional cooperation within the EAEU. Moreover, the course discusses specific challenges arising in Central Asia as part of Greater Eurasia, including issues of security, regional connectivity, and the preservation of a common humanitarian space in the region.
Learning Objectives
- To provide students with ability to understand the complex phenomena of Eurasian integration
- To provide students with ability to understand the evolution of Eurasian integration since 1994
- To provide students with ability to learn about the major institutions and formats in Eurasia, and role of Russia in these processes
- To provide students with the ability to distinguish the main institutional and economic features between the EAEU and other major integration associations in Eurasia - ASEAN and the EU
Expected Learning Outcomes
- To distinguish the theoretical features of integration, the differences between economic integration and other forms of foreign trade cooperation (in particular, the concept of connectivity)
- To analyse the features of China's Belt and Road Initiative, its limitations, achievements and problems
- To identify the features of BRICS as an integration element of the Global South and its role in the Russian "Eurasian" strategy
- To analyze the genesis and evolution of Eurasian integration, explain the main stages of its promotion, key institutions and formats
- To assess the development of common markets of the EAEU
- To identify the key achievements and shortcomings of the work of supranational bodies of the EAEU
- To assess the key features of the foreign economic strategy of the EAEU at the present stage, taking into account anti-Russian sanctions
- To assess the prospects for the development of the BRICS-EAEU-SCO triangle and broader cooperation with the participation of BRICS-EAEU-SCO-ASEAN as the core of the Greater Eurasian Space
