Course Syllabus
Abstract
(!) Prerequisites (!): advanced Persian and the itermediate level of knowledge of Middle Eastern history.
The course provides an introduction to contemporary debates regarding theoretical approaches and general methodology for studying the cultures and histories of societies in the region traditionally referred to as the Middle East. While mainly focusing on Iran, Minor and Central Asia (geographically) and such topics as religion, state, and nationalism (epistemologically), this cause examines the key developments in the region in their historical perspective. In so doing, special attention is paid to the history of Russia's involvement in the region throughout the last four centuries.
Learning Objectives
- the course will: - provide a history of the influences of Islam across the Middle East and Central Asia; - introduce students to major developments in politics, empire, and culture in the Middle East and Central Asia; - expose students to major themes in world history; - foster comparison between different regions of the world; - introduce practices of critical analysis in seminars.

- Week 1 Seminar. Introduction to the course (how to write book reviews, essays and make oral presentations). Lecture 1. Introduction to Islam.
- Week 2 Seminar. Lecture 2. The Inception of Islam.

- Week 4 (book review due) Seminar for Lecture 3. Lecture 4. The Ottoman Empire.
