Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course “Contemporary Iranian Culture: Art, Society, Traditions (Part Two)” «Современная иранская культура: искусство, общество, традиции (часть вторая)» is designed for one academic year (two sessions – 2 пары - per week; one lecture session in English and one seminar session in Persian). This course is designed for 5th year students studying Arabic Studies who have already completed the course “Contemporary Iranian Culture: Art, Society, Traditions” with me. The primary aim of this course is to develop students' four Persian language skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening, and speaking) in the context of contemporary Iranian culture. The second goal of this course is to introduce students to different aspects of contemporary Iranian culture as a platform for a better understanding of the Contemporary Middle East. The third goal of this course is to introduce students to a range of up-to-date academic sources in English about the subjects discussed during this course. This will greatly help them to strengthen their academic skills.
Learning Objectives
- The initial aim of this course is to introduce students to different aspects of contemporary Iranian society. The second goal of this course is to introduce students to a range of up-to-date academic sources in English and Persian languages about the subjects discussed during this course, which will greatly help the students to strengthen their academic skills. The third goal of this course is to develop students' four Persian language skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening, and speaking) in the context of contemporary Iranian culture. These goals are achieved in two ways: A detailed analysis of the most important historical, political, intellectual, social, and religious aspects of Iran from before the 19th century to the present day, using a range of well-known academic sources in English; A review of some Persian literary and artistic works from the early 20th century to the present. This introduction will facilitate a better understanding of the topics discussed during this course. In the fifth year (2026-27), an in-depth study of contemporary Iranian art will be conducted.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- To have more in-depth knowledge of various aspects of Iranian society, including historical events, political and social changes, religious perspectives, and artistic productions since the early19th century
- To have a comprehensive view of a wide range of academic sources in English and Persian relevant to the topics covered during the course.
- To have an advanced level of proficiency in the four Persian language skills, as well as the ability to analyse acquired knowledge using this language.
