Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the doing business conditions and implementing business strategies in Asian countries, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. The course covers a range of practically-oriented topics: various types of Asian brands and the specifics of their promotion, East Asian global value chains and their commercial dimension; multilateral venues focusing on business cooperation; interpersonal relationships as a driver in commercial success in the Asia-Pacific region; as well as the specifics of government-business dialogue in Asia-Pacific countries. The course is integrated with projects that are carried out at the HSE University and focus on Asia-Pacific commercial practices.

  • The course aims at developing fundamental competencies necessary for understanding major characteristics of the Asia-Pacific region as a business environment. The course offers a seamless approach to exploring the most significant macro-factors influencing the business environment and the strategies of companies that operate in the region
  • This objective is achieved by addressing the following tasks. To identify the distinctive features of the Asia-Pacific region as a doing business area;
  • This objective is achieved by addressing the following tasks. To present an outline of global value chains (GVC) in the Asia-Pacific region (both producer GVC and consumer GVC), as well as to trace the specifics of their digital transformation;
  • This objective is achieved by addressing the following tasks. • To classify Asian brands and identify major features of successful advertising campaigns in the Asia-Pacific region, including those that use neuro-marketing tools;
  • This objective is achieved by addressing the following tasks. • To examine and assess the characteristics of personal relationship marketing across the Asia-Pacific region, as well as to compare them with Western and Russian practices. Special attention will be paid to their digital transformation;
  • . This objective is achieved by addressing the following tasks. • To highlight the distinctive features of Asia-Pacific companies (chaebols, keiretsu, state-owned enterprises in the PRC, micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises in Southeast Asian countries). The most significant aspects of their corporate governance will be traced;
  • This objective is achieved by addressing the following tasks. • To explore the specifics of government-business relations in the Asia-Pacific region (exemplified by China, Vietnam and India).

  • Be able to search for and analyze information on topics within the subject area, to work as part of a team, and to present the results of this activity;
  • Understand macro-factors shaping business practices in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the way they evolve;
  • Analyze the processes shaping the business environment in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as independently resolve issues relevant to optimal strategies for conducting commercial activities in the region;
