Course Syllabus
Abstract
This intermediate-level Indonesian course (Basic Course III) is designed for non-native learners of Thai language who have taken approximately two years of regularly paced college-level Thai language. It aims to further improve the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing; while at the same time introducing students to the complex fabric that makes up modern Thai language. Through all things considered, students learn the vocabulary needed to discuss the modern societies of Russia and Thailand and the issues that face people in those societies today, as presented in the official Thai media. The overall goal of this course is to bring students’ Thai language proficiency to a more advanced level and help them develop an active command of authentic reading materials. At the end of the course, students will achieve B2 level according to the CEFR.
Learning Objectives
- Communicative competence – developing communicative skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing in communicative scenarios and topics chosen for the course;
- language competence – learning new language units (orthographic, phonetic, lexical, grammar) related to communicative scenarios and topics of the course; learning about language phenomena in the foreign language, about various ways of expressing ideas using the native and foreign languages;
- socio-cultural competence – introducing students to the culture, traditions and realia of the country whose language they are learning; developing skills of presenting their country and its culture when communicating with foreigners;
- cognitive competence – developing general and special academic skills; familiarizing students with available ways of autonomous learning of a foreign language and culture, ICT included.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Socio-cultural competence: • Demonstrate knowledge of Korean culture, etiquette and society within topics covered during the course.
- Comprehension skills: • Understand main ideas of clear standard input on matters encountered in daily and university life (Intermediate and Upper-intermediate levels) both in written and oral speech; • Fully understand texts (both oral and written) of Intermediate level on topics covered during the course without a dictionary.
- Producing skills: • Make proper word and grammar choices (Intermediate level) and adjust speech and writing register to express intended meaning within topics covered during the course; • Express themselves with fluency and accuracy, both orally and in writing, on matters encountered in daily and university life and covered during the course; • Engage in meaningful conversations on a variety of topics covered during the course.
Assessment Elements
- HomeworkDescription: After every class, you will receive a homework assignment to practice new grammar and vocabulary. It can include the following: 1 Grammar exercises; 2 Online activities for vocabulary practice; 3 Dialogue: You are required to listen to the dialogue and learn it by heart or repeat after audio not looking in the text or listen and fill in the blanks. 4 Text: You are required to read or retell a text using the phrases from the text, and answer questions. 5 Writing text using given vocabulary and grammar. 6 Translation from Thai to Russian/ from Russian to Thai
- Final examDescription: Exam consists of the writing test (writing an essay on one of the topics covered during the course, translation from Russian to Thai, translation from Thai to Russian, Lexical-Grammar test) and the oral part (Reading and interpreting text, translation from Thai or Russian and from Russian to Thai). Students are expected to use words, expressions & grammar learned in the class during the conversation.
- Unit testDescription: The test consists of two parts: 1) Writing test (lexico-grammatical test, vocabulary test, sentences or texts for translation from Russian to Thai / from Thai to Russian); 2) Interview (students are required to talk to instructor on the topic of the Unit / read, retell text and answer questions). The format and the topics of the test are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
- In-class assignmentDescription: In-class assignment includes quizzes, dialogue practice, conversations, group discussions, translations etc. Quizzes can be given during the first 15 minutes of a class.
- ParticipationParticipation in class consists of two parts: in-class assignment and discipline. In-class assignment include quizzes, dialogue practice, conversations, group discussions, translations etc. Grade for discipline is to be awarded after every class or two classes combined if they are held on one day. It will depend on the number of reprimands received by a student for disturbing the class, talking without permission, fidgeting with the phone and not paying attention etc. It is calculated as follows: Grade 9 – no remarks; Grade 7 – 1 remark; Grade 5 – 2 remarks; Grade 3 - 3 remarks; Grade 1–more than 3 remarks. In order to get full marks for the participation students also need to actively participate in the class discussions, to demonstrate familiarity with assigned readings and lecture material, including being prepared to answer the questions that the class teacher may pose.
