Abstract
West and East of Europe in comparison: France, Poland, Russia, 15th through 19th Centuries
This course aims to elaborate a range of comparative approaches to crucial topics in history of Western, Central and Eastern Europe. The course discusses major trends in political, cultural and social evolution of territories which make now France, Poland and Russia in the 15th – 19th centuries. The main focus is placed on pre-modern and modern identities that emerged here in a result of 1) geopolitical contexts, 2) encounter of various religious traditions, and 3) modernization. The course sees these three processes as deeply interconnected. It challenges conventional (national, imperial, modernization) paradigms of historical writings on Western and Eastern Europe. What did make a difference between nobility, clergy, town people, rising bourgeoisie, peasants in France, Poland, Russia? What was peculiar in the Russian autocracy and Polish-Lithuanian “noble republic” in comparison to French absolutism? Why did Poland decline and the Russian Empire emerge? How strong were Byzantine, Asian and European influences on Poland and Russia? What were distinctive features of modernization processes in France, Poland and Russia? How did nationalisms emerge and national identities take shape in these societies, in the 15th – 19th centuries? What was different and common in genesis and evolution of revolutionary socialist movements? These issues will be placed in center of seminar discussions and subjected to comparative analysis. The course aims to develop a comprehensive and critical understanding of problems which stand behind these questions.
