Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is designed for students placed at a strong B2 level of English proficiency: the students with the minimum score of 60 points on the Placement test. This course is the first part of a three-part Advanced English course for general communication purposes, composed in accordance with the Conceptual Framework for Developing Students’ Foreign Language Competencies in Bachelor’s, Specialist’s, and Master’s Degree Programmes at National Research University Higher School of Economics. Studying a wide range of relevant topics related to modern life will enable students to communicate freely in different situations and contexts: in study, work and personal life. The course offers an array of contemporary authentic materials for reading and listening to build up confidence and ability to understand real life English. Developing speaking and writing skills focuses on producing clear, logical, and argumentative oral and written discourse. The main teaching materials used are the "New Language Leader" Advanced, covering topics such as: 1. Education and Employment: education, the impact of the internet on learning, motivation to study, successful careers; 2. Tourism and Conservation: travel, unconventional tourism, biodiversity, environmental impact of tourism, eco-tourism, environmental protection; 3. International Relations: national mentalities, national identity, intercultural interaction, conflict resolution. The total workload of the course is 3 academic credits, including 48 hours of practical classroom lessons.
Learning Objectives
- The goal of the course is to develop students' foreign language communicative competence to a C1 level in accordance with the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Successful completion of the course should enable the acquisition of any international certificate confirming readiness and ability to study in international higher professional education programs. The intelligent approach to the topics in the course is intended to challenge students and allow them to develop their powers of expression and analysis – and in particular, their critical thinking skills. The course is based on a broadly communicative approach, with language contextualised in texts and a task-based approach to practice and language exploration.

- learning new vocabulary related to the natural world and nature conservation, learning and practising travel collocations and phrasal verbs, identifying and using linking words and phrases
- learning to predict information in listening
- listening for gist, considering and studying active listening, evaluating and trying to improve their own listening skills
- reading for eliciting meaning from context, gathering information from short reading texts
- learning about subordinate clauses, learning about perfect modals, studying the stylistic devices used by public speakers
- learning and practicing the vocabulary related to international relations, collocations connected with the diplomatic world, adjectives of character, learning about abbreviations and acronyms
- discussing traits making up national identity and particular cultural differences, discussing the life of an ambassador, discovering more about international organisations

- Oral Speech Assessment (OA)Oral speech assessment (monological speech and answers to questions) on the topic: prepared and unprepared speech (depending on the group level), taking part in debates, round tables discussions etc.
