Abstract

This class is devoted to reading and interpreting some of the best pieces of short fiction—both modern and contemporary—from several periods and cultural contexts. In the literary sense, modern fiction and modernism refer to the period from the late 1800s until at least the 1930s. Thus, during the first part of the semester we will read short stories and novellas from the late 19 th to early 20 th century. This period is famously one of the most vibrant and exuberant in world literature and art. It was marked by profound social, political, economic, and technological transformations that ultimately generated an unprecedented diversity of artistic movements and cultural production. In particular, we will discuss how the literature of the period reflects the loss of shared values, the crisis of language and the artist, and the heightened sensitivity of the individual in a culture increasingly compromised by technology, urbanization, mass media, and changing gender dynamics During the second part of the semester, we will read short fiction from the late 20 th and early 21 st century and discuss how literary texts written 100 years apart reflect on similar or totally different issues. Also, in the last few weeks of classes, students will engage in a research project, devoted to the short fiction of the twenty-first century. This project should explore the trends and themes that shape the society of the millennium and its artistic productions. Active participation in class discussions is crucial to doing well in this course. During the semester students will write several response papers, prepare one oral presentation and participate in a research project. After the completion of this course students should improve their overall English language proficiency: their writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Yet, the primary focus of this course is on the development of students’ literary and cultural competencies, as well as their analytical and interpretative reading and writing skills.
