Course Syllabus

Abstract

The Management in Asian Countries course provides a comprehensive overview of the culture and business practices in East and South East Asia, including India and the United Arab Emirates. Such an overview provides students with a solid and fundamental basis for understanding the key factors that influence the formulation and implementation of business strategy in these countries. Students will learn about the particularities of doing business in Asian markets, and the challenges of setting up and managing a business in Asia. Students will complete the course with a better understanding of how to identify and evaluate the risks and opportunities associated with Asian markets. In addition, the course focuses on some of the key business practices, industries and prominent companies in the region. By critically examining the unique macro factors, business and management practices specific to these industries, companies and countries, students will gain an in-depth understanding of management in Asia with a broad regional and global perspective.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Essay
The essay is an individual research paper that enables students to explore a specific managerial, organizational or cultural aspect of management in Asian countries in depth. The assignment aims to developing students’ analytical thinking, research skills, and academic writing within an Asian business and institutional context. The essay should demonstrate how cultural, historical, institutional, and social factors shape management systems, leadership styles, decision-making processes, and human resource practices in Asian countries. Requirements Each student must prepare an independent and original research paper. Students are required to consult with the instructor in advance to select and approve their essay topic. The topic must be directly related to management practices in one or more Asian countries and aligned with the learning objectives of the course Management in Asian Countries. Academic Integrity and AI Use All ideas, data, and direct quotations drawn from external sources must be appropriately cited within the text and fully listed in the reference section. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly) were used or not used, this must be clearly stated in a brief declaration at the end of the paper. The declaration should specify the name of the AI tool and the purpose of its use (e.g., language editing, idea generation, literature search support), or explicitly confirm that no AI tools were used.
  • blocking Final Exam
The final examination is conducted in written form and consists of two sections designed to assess both factual knowledge and analytical competencies in the field of management in Asian countries. Section 1. Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) • 10 multiple-choice questions • Each question has four answer options, with one correct answer • Questions cover all countries studied in the course • Focus on applied understanding rather than memorization Section 2. Open-Ended Analytical Questions • 4 open-ended questions • Students answer all questions • Answers require structured arguments, country-specific examples and theory-based reasoning
  • non-blocking Attendance
Regular attendance is an essential component of the course and forms part of the overall evaluation. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes (lectures and seminars). Attendance is monitored throughout the semester. Full attendance or absence only for valid, documented reasons contributes positively to the final grade. Unexcused absences will result in a reduction of the final course grade. Absences due to medical or other HSE University officially documented reasons are considered excused in accordance with HSE University regulations. If a student attends less than 60% of the course sessions, attendance will not be counted toward the course evaluation.
  • non-blocking Mini-tests
Mini-tests are short in-class or online assessments consisting of ten multiple-choice questions. Each question provides four answer options, with only one correct answer. Mini-tests are designed to assess students’ understanding and application of key concepts, terminology, and country-specific management practices covered in the course lectures and readings.
  • non-blocking Participation
Active and informed participation in class discussions, including contributions to case analyses, engagement in comparative discussions of management practices across Asian countries and demonstration of preparedness through the use of relevant concepts, terminology and examples from the course materials.
  • non-blocking Team Project
Students complete an in-class team-based problem-solving project designed to assess their ability to apply theoretical concepts to complex, context-specific managerial challenges in Asia. Students work in teams of five and are presented with a case-based managerial problem involving an organization operating in one or more Asian countries. The case reflects real-world complexities such as cultural norms, leadership styles, institutional constraints, decision-making processes, and strategic dilemmas characteristic of Asian management systems.
