Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course on sustainable development and ESG practices provides a conceptual and theoretical framework that is applied to a number of recent business cases based on real data. The lectures provide the theoretical grounding and the smaller seminar groups are used for case studies.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • To develop a conceptual and theoretical framework for sustainable development and corporate ESG practices in the age of AI. The framework includes shareholder theory, stakeholder theory, CSR, the Triple Bottom Line, Value-Based Management, Value Rationality, AI and the Value Alignment Problem, Relative and Absolute Value, Corporate Core Values, Organisational Integrity, Perceived Leader Integrity, and Ethical Leadership. AI and ethical decision-making.
  • To apply and test the conceptual and theoretical frameworks that support sustainable development and ESG practices in simulated cases based on real events and actual data from the local and international business environment including and use of Large Language Models and AI.
  • To discuss and debate and critically analyse the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to sustainable development and ESG practices with a particular focus on the use of AI to support creative thinking and decision-making.
  • To integrate ethical principles into corporate strategy that supports sustainable development and ESG practices through effective collaboration with AI.

  • Describe essential sustainable development concepts, SDGs, and ESG frameworks in business contexts.
  • Recognize normative ethical theories and how they influence sustainability decisions.
  • Evaluate different ethical approaches (utilitarian, deontological, virtue ethics) in light of practical ESG challenges.
  • Explain the basics of communicative rationality as a foundation for human-centric decision-making.
  • Analyze ESG-related business cases using stakeholder theory and ethical frameworks.
  • Actively participate in seminar discussions, demonstrating ethical reasoning and reflective thinking.
  • Present clear and concise written and oral arguments on sustainability and ESG topics.

  • non-blocking Seminar Case Participation (5 seminars):
    Each seminar case study is considered as a SEPARATE CONTROL ELEMENT - No retakes are possible - the best four out of the five separate control elements are used towards the calculation of the final grade.
  • blocking Written Assignments
    Two written answers to questions set at the beginning of the course which must be submitted by the end of the course
  • blocking Video Justifications (two 1-minute videos)
    The two video assignments are used to defend and justify the written answers given in the corresponding written assignment
  • non-blocking Final Exam (multiple-choice, 20 questions)
    There are no retakes for this element - students are required to check their access to StartExam and to inform the tutor in writing prior to the exam session that the control element is not visible or accessible to the student on the StartExam platform.
