Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course investigates Human Resource Management (HRM) in multinational companies, with a focus on the international management context. It examines how cultural, legal, economic, and organizational differences shape HR practices in different countries and how global companies make choices between standardization and adaptation of HRM strategies and practices across the world. Students will analyze such aspects of the HRM as HR Brand, recruitment and selection, expatriate management, talent development, performance appraisal, compensation & benefits, and compliance within diverse regulatory environments. Through case studies, simulations, and team projects, students will design HRM solutions that enhance organizational performance while respecting local norms and global standards. Emphasis will be made on strategic thinking, corporate culture, ethical leadership, cross-cultural communication, and DIEB approaches. By the end of the course, students will be provided with the comprehensive and integrated knowledge of Human Resource Management in an international setting as well as the approaches to HRM of a globally dispersed workforce which will contribute to sustainable competitive advantage in international contexts.
Learning Objectives
- Understanding of alignment of HR strategy with global corporate strategy in multinational companies.
- Understanding of core HRM functions in multinational settings (recruitment, training, performance management, compensation & benefits, talent management) and their cross-border variations.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Assess the impact of IHRM on the organizational performance using descriptive, diagnostic, predictive & prescriptive analytics
- Evaluate the influence of cross-cultural differences on IHRM strategic and operational decisions with regards to standardization or adaptation
- Analyze the types of corporate culture and how they influence on practices of HRM, be able to work out plans how to adapt corporate culture in accordance with international business strategy and employees` national differences
- Design inclusive, compliant, and scalable HR projects for global companies
- Explain how international companies manage their expatriates, why companies use expatriates and what challenges are in international assignment

Assessment Elements
- Class ParticipationAny student present in the class can earn up to 10 points on each seminar by participation in the group exercises or for individual input. You must be ready to share your ideas and actively listen to and interpret the ideas presented by others. Quality input possess one or more of the following attributes: • Provide qualitative input to the case analysis • Provide analysis of the theory and concepts • Offer a relevant concept or personal experience • Move the discussion forward by building on or challenging previous contributions with new insights • Ask thoughtful and challenging questions allowing the class to explore the nuances of the topic under consideration.
- EssayThis is the short individual reflection paper (up to 1000 words).
- Group Project (Presentation)Group (5-6 students) mini-project and presentation on a particular aspect of Global HRM. The presentation must contain 5-6 slides and be 10 minutes long. Topics are proposed by the lecturer or by the students and confirmed by the lecturer. The students must make a presentation based on a topic, where they could apply the theories that have been studied during the lectures and seminars. All the group members must speak during the presentation. Presentations are performed by the students during each seminar in accordance with the theme of the seminar. Results are announced in two-three days after the seminar, when presentation was made.
- ExamTest based on 10 multiple choice questions and 2 open-ended questions to be answered within the limited time. Test will be conducted offline in StartExam without proctoring. Overall duration of the exam is 30 minutes.
- AttendanceThe student's physical presence at lectures and seminars is recorded at any time during the lecture or seminar.
